User Reviews about Canon imageCLASS MF4690 Monochrome Laser All-in-One Printer (1827B001)
November 30, 2009 Update: Canon posted a driver on November 13, 2009 for Windows 7, this driver does install a PCL5e printer driver and a USB (not network) scanner driver. Follow instructions exactly on the download page. I turned my printer off, installed the driver, turned the printer back on, and it took a couple minutes for it to find the printer and install properly. I did not install the DiasServicePack_Multi.exe file also dated November 13, 2009.
----------------------
As of November 11, 2009, there is no driver for the Canon MF4690 or any Canon MF4600 Series printer for Windows 7. Messages from Windows 7; 'Windows was unable to install your MF4600 Series', 'Windows could not find driver software for your device'. I am unable to print with my Canon MF4690, which worked quite well under Windows XP.
At [...] when one chooses OS 'Windows 7', it says 'No drivers are available for this selection. This operating system may not require a driver or, in the case of older operating systems, may no longer be supported.'
Installing the driver for XP/Vista gives some print functionality until the computer is rebooted. Then it's back to the above.
You can complain to Microsoft at the Windows 7 Compatibility Center and to Canon at their site. -- Windows 7 drivers for Canon MF4600 Series Printers
My only problem is that Canon gave me wrong information, and it seems to be industry wide, and that is to confuse "duplex scanning" with "duplex printing". I bought this printer on the Canon reps description of the product that it does "duplex scanning" meaning to scan both sides of one document at the same time. When it arrived and I found out that it did not, I called Canon support again, and inquired as a new customer would, about machines that did "duplex scanning". I was told by a sales rep that "all of our image class printers do duplex scanning" which is totally incorrect as none of their Image Class printers have this feature. Otherwise it probably is a good printer. ;+) -- Not as advertised
I don't know if this is a recent addition or not, but as of August 2009, Canon offers a free download of something called "ScanGear" (ScanGear_V110_MacOSX_us_EN.dmg), which works great for scanning with OS X (I'm using Leopard on PowerPC, but Intel seems supported too). On the MF4690, just hit the scan button, loaded a page (printing side up), and after installing ScanGear, ran the default installer and then fired up the built in ImageCapture (under Applications in Finder). ImageCapture will say "No Image Capture Device connected," but just hit Devices/Scan Devices, then choose CanonMF4600 Series (with the USB icon) and click "Use TWAIN UI". It's basically a conduit to save and do basic editing in Preview, but cropping, etc. work fine. Under the advanced tab, you can choose Platen or Sheet Feeder, etc. For simple document scanning, I used 150 dpi+grayscale, and then printed to PDF to emulate efax email. No issues whatsoever (and I've had my share of troubleshooting crappy TWAIN devices on Macs and Windows).
As a printer/faxer, I've also been very pleased. After 9 months of use, it's never let me down, and I haven't had to replace the original toner yet (though I'm probably on the moderate side of print use). -- This *does* fully support OS X Mac scanning
